Sarah Moller & Chris Thiel, “Snow Dome”
9 September – 2 October 2016

Snow Dome is an exhibition which explores the beguiling world of snow: a magical realm where one shake of the snow dome reconfigures the ordinary into a shimmering white fantasy. Drawn to the allure of the world blanketed in white, artists Chris Thiel and Sarah Moller create paintings which explore the flawless white surface and its accompanying undercurrent of potential peril.

The works in this exhibition are topographies of atmosphere, in which views of the snow experience become a vehicle for invoking nostalgia. Functioning via an uncertainty of form, textural effects blur, obscure and cast haze over the sharp edges of perceived reality, presenting the painted image through an ethereal shroud. The primacy of white paint subsumes colour in the glare of overexposure, prompting viewers to peer with concentration at the dreamlike landscape before them. The resulting works are scenes which deny concretion in full visibility, as viewers are seduced to take a closer look through the white veil before them.
